The Portland Art Museum has contributed approximately 2,500 images to the Artstor Digital Library, with a particular focus on their exceptional holdings in Native American and Northwest art.

Founded in 1892, the Portland Art Museum is one of the oldest museums in the country and the first in the Pacific Northwest. The Museum’s encyclopedic collection of over 42,000 objects reflects the history of art from ancient times to today. The Museum features centers for Native American art, Northwest art, and modern and contemporary art, as well as permanent exhibition galleries for Asian art, American art, European art, photography, graphic arts, silver, and an outdoor public sculpture garden.

The Museum’s collection of Native American art consists of thousands of objects that date from pre-European contact to the present, many of which are featured in Artstor. The collection includes the work of some 200 North American cultural groups. Anchored by the world-renowned collections of Alex Rasmussen and Elizabeth Cole Butler, the Museum’s abundance of Native American art is the single most visited and researched aspect of the collection.

The Museum also has a long history of collecting and exhibiting local artists. With dedicated space, and a Northwest art endowment that supports the ongoing acquisition of artworks, as well as the continuing APEX exhibition series, the Portland Art Museum has demonstrated a deep commitment to the art of the region. The Northwest art collection comprises works from the 19th – 21st centuries and includes all media.
