The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) has contributed nearly 4050 images of American college sites from the Historic Campus Architecture Project (HCAP) to the Artstor Digital Library.  The selection includes architectural photography, both current and vintage, of exterior and interior views, groundplans, campus maps and other historic documents of campus environments and landscapes throughout the United States.

The Council of Independent Colleges Historic Campus Architecture Project (HCAP) is the first national architecture and landscape database of independent college and university campuses. With support from the Getty Foundation, it documents nearly 2,100 places of historical significance with thousands of images, and it includes extensive information about buildings, landscapes, campus plans, and heritage sites of American higher education. Close to 400 institutions have participated in the project.

The growth of HCAP reflects the increasing interest in campus history in the educational community. Academic institutions are working to understand their physical environments and how they relate to their educational mission, as well as wider historical trends.

The Council of Independent Colleges is an association of more than 700 independent, liberal arts colleges and universities and higher education affiliates and organizations that work together to strengthen college and university leadership, sustain high-quality education, and enhance private higher education’s contributions to society.
